Ray Somers was born on Nov. 28, 1917, in Garland, Utah. Somers graduated from the Bear River High School in 1936 and attended the Utah State Agricultural College in 1937. In school, Somers discovered his passion for radio and electronics. To support himself through his education, he opened and managed a radio repair shop in the spring of 1938. Thatcher Opera House (Logan, Utah)

The Thatcher Opera House (Logan, Utah) was built by George W. Thatcher, who had managed the Salt Lake Theater Company. The 800-seat theater opened in September 1890, occupying the top two floors of a new bank building. The theater was used for traveling operas, concerts, plays, vaudeville shows, movies, boxing, and other activities until April 17, 1912, when it was destroyed by a fire which started in an adjacent store.
